Summary: RoadFlare is free, open-source software — not a service or company. It is a protocol client, like an email app. You are responsible for your own keys, your own rides, and your own safety. The software is provided as-is with no warranties.
RoadFlare is an open-source iOS application licensed under the MIT License. It is a client for the Ridestr protocol, an open rideshare coordination protocol built on Nostr.
RoadFlare is not:
RoadFlare is software that enables direct, peer-to-peer communication between users over the Nostr protocol. It does not match riders with drivers, set prices, process payments, or employ anyone. All interactions are between individuals who already know each other.
The Ridestr protocol is an open standard. Events are published to third-party Nostr relay servers, not to any server operated by the RoadFlare project. The protocol defines how ride offers, acceptances, confirmations, and messages are structured and encrypted.
Because the protocol is open and decentralized:
Your identity on Nostr is a cryptographic key pair (a private key and a public key). This key pair is generated on your device and is entirely your responsibility.
By using RoadFlare, you acknowledge and accept that:

RoadFlare does not provide any insurance coverage for rides, drivers, riders, vehicles, or property. Users are strongly encouraged to maintain their own personal auto insurance and to verify that any driver they ride with has appropriate coverage.

Nostr relay operators may impose their own terms of service, acceptable use policies, and content moderation rules. If a relay operator blocks your public key or refuses to store your events, that is between you and the relay operator. The RoadFlare project has no control over relay policies.
